ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE EVENT – Larry Kaplan – 50 states in 30 days TODAY at MAGIC ISLAND 5:00PM (August 18, 2016)

I’d like to invite you to join us as a volunteer who’s been making his way across the United States does his Hawaii Ice Bucket Challenge tomorrow afternoon.
Larry Kaplan, a long-time volunteer for The ALS Association, has embarking on an ambitious journey to travel to all 50 states in 30 days during the month of August ( and taking on a state-specific “bucket challenge” in each one to raise money and awareness for the ALS cause. Below is a news report from Boston explaining his trip:
Larry will take his Hawaii Area challenge on Thursday, August 18, 2016 at 5 pm at the Diamond Head side of Magic Island. Larry will be honoring the work of The ALS Association Golden West Chapter and support of the upcoming Hawaii Walk to Defeat ALS by taking his challenge with a bucket of fresh pineapple and pineapple ice.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a fatal, neurodegenerative disease that attacks nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. People with ALS lose their ability to move, speak, swallow and eventually the ability to breathe, while all five senses continue to function normally. ALS can strike anyone, at any time. It knows no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries, though military veterans are at twice the risk. The average life expectancy of a person with ALS is two to five years from diagnosis. At this time, there is no known cause and no known cure.
The ALS Association Golden West Chapter serves people living with ALS and their loved ones in the state of Hawaii and in 31 counties throughout California. Through multidisciplinary ALS clinic care, support groups, advocacy, education and care management, the Golden West Chapter provides services and support free of charge to people with ALS and their families.
